Kurt grew up in the piney woods and lakes of East Texas and is glad to be back home. Kurt returns from the high plains of the Texas Panhandle where he earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science and his Master’s in Counseling Psychology, as well as his Master’s in Communications from the Texas A&M system.
Kurt started his counseling experience in 2005 in Amarillo, Texas working with ages 3-17 at an emergency shelter for individuals who had been removed from their homes by CPS. During his 14 year career, Kurt has treated adult patients across the spectrum from mild, situational depression all the way through to severe disorders. Other areas of experience include personality disorders, mood disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism spectrum disorders, substance use disorders, and crisis/life changes. Kurt also has a passion and a great deal of experience working with the LGBTQ community. Kurt has also taught parenting, co-parenting, anger management and Battery Intervention and Prevention (BIPP) classes for 5 years.
Kurt believes that people are result of both nature (inherited traits) and nurture (environment). His approach to therapy reflects this. He believes people tend to see the world (and themselves) through different lenses. These change over time through life experiences, sometimes resulting in the lens being scratched or cloudy. Kurt’s practice using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) highlights these lenses and helps clients remove the fogginess or scratch to help see the world and themselves more clearly.
With young patients (aged 5-10, depending upon level of emotional maturity), Kurt uses both directive and non-directive play therapy. This allows children to communicate through their play the way adults do verbally. Kurt is a trained Play Therapist and is currently applying for the Registered Play Therapist (RPT) credential.
Kurt has a wonderful fiancée who is a middle school band director. Kurt’s hobbies are computer gaming, he loves to read books, and enjoys coaching youth football. He is also likes to cycle and is an amateur sabermatrician.
